Vikalpa

We are pleased to announce the launch of Vikalpa, a new citizen journalism initiative in Sri Lanka that focuses on content in Sinhala and Tamil. Through the exploration of alternative narratives on conflict transformation, democracy, good governance and peace in Sri Lanka, this website aims to showcase voices rarely featured in mainstream media in the vernacular.

Vikalpa demonstrates the commitment of the Centre for Policy Alternatives (CPA), Colombo, Sri Lanka to critique and strengthen governance and democracy through citizen journalism and new media. It also complements Groundviews, Sri Lanka’s first citizen journalism site and now a recognised standard for alternative perspectives, news, analysis and information on Sri Lanka.

I am all for broadening the range of voices in the public discourse.

I do understand that blogging (represented by groundviews) does not require fact checking and such. However, Vikalpa portrays itself as a newspaper. It seems that the editors of Vikalpa should not simply carry stories, but make some attempt to ensure veracity.

The story about busfares from Dambulla contained some obvious errors. The entire computation was on operational costs (if not fuel costs). A bus represents an investment. It has to be maintained and the investor must get a return on his investment. That return must be higher than what he would get if he put the money in a bank account. To ignore these basic facts and make assertions is not simply inaccurate; it is harmful.

Research has shown that the tendency to focus only on recovering operational costs has led to the deterioration of services and infrastructure in Sri Lanka. Vikalpa should not contribute to this.

ෙමත්සිරි වඩුෙග් ෙරාහාන් සමරජීවට

ෙරාහාන් සමරජීව මහතාෙග් ප්‍රතිචාරය වැදගත්ය. නමුත් ඔහුට අත්හැරී අැති ෙකාටස ෙමෙස්යි. ෙමම ගණන් හැදීම සම්පූර්ණ නැත. නමුත් ෙමමගින් ඉතා පැහැදිලිව පෙ ෙනන්ෙන් අාණ්ඩුව සමග ඒක්ව පුද්ගලික බස් ජාවාරම මගින් සූරාකන අන්දමයි.

බස් සංගමය කියන පරිදි ෙමම ගණන් ඉස්සීමට ෙහ්තුවූෙය් ෙරාහාන් සමරජීව මහතා කියන ෙහ්තු ෙනාෙව්. ඩීසල් මිල ඉහළ යාමය. පුරවැසිෙයකු ෙලස අප දකින්ෙන් ඒම ෙහ්තුවයි. අප ව්‍යාපාරිකයින් ෙනාෙව්. අප මගීන්ය. අප කරන්ෙන් අෙප් අයිතිය ගැන කතා කිරීමයි. අාෙයා්ජන සහ ලාභ ගැන කතා කිරීම ෙවනත් අයට බාරය.

පුද්ගලික බස් ෙස්වය ජාවාරමකි. ජරා ජාවාරමකි. මිනිසුන් ෙනාමිනිසුන් කරන ජාවාරමකි. ඒය පාඩු ලබන ජාවාරමක් ෙනාෙව්. පාඩු අඩු කර ගැනීමට අත්‍යව්‍යශම අංගයක් වන කළමණාකරණය ඒ්වාෙය් නැත්ෙත් ලාභ අැති තරම් තිෙබන නිසාය. ෙම් වනාහි ෙජ් අාර් කී වර්ගෙෙය් ෙහාර ජාවාරම්කරුවනි වෙරල්ලා වෙරල්ලා යන වර්ගයයි. (Let the robber baroness come)

ෙම් මිල වැඩි කිරීම මගින් මගීන් ගැන තුට්ටුවකටවත් ෙනාතකන පුද්ගලික බස් ජාවාරෙම් ලාභ ඉහළ ානායන්ෙන් යැයි ෙරාහාන් සමරජීව මහතා කියන්ෙන් නම් වීජ ගණිතෙයන් ගණන් හදා ෙපන්විමට බැරි කමක් නැත.

ඒය අවශ්‍ය ෙනාවන්ෙන් අප කතා කරන්ෙන් පුරවැසියනට මිස අාෙයා්ජකයනට ෙනාවන නිසාය.
