Drug Uses
Lipitor is used with diet changes (restriction of cholesterol and fat intake) for reducing the amount of cholesterol and certain fat substances in the blood. Accumulation of cholesterol and fats along the walls of your arteries (a process known as atherosclerosis) decreases blood flow and, as a result, decreases the oxygen supply to your heart, brain, and other parts of your body. Lowering your blood level of cholesterol and fats may help to prevent heart disease, angina (Chest pain), strokes, and heart attacks.
How Taken
Lipitor comes as a tablet to take in by mouth. It is generally taken once a day with or without a meal. It is advised to take Lipitor at about the same time each day. Your physician can prescribe you a lower dosage to start with and then gradually increase the dosage. Don't stop taking Lipitor without your physician`s approval, even if you feel better. You should have a low cholesterol and low fat diet while taking this drug.
Additional Information
During curing with Lipitor, alcohol should be taken only in small doses. Taking alcohol and Lipitor at the same time can increase the risk of liver damage. Don't take grapefruit juice with Lipitor–they may interact, which can lead to potentially unsafe side effects. Discuss the use of alcohol, grapefruit and grapefruit juice with your doctor. Don't increase or decrease the amount of grapefruit products in your diet without first talking with your physician.
